  Immigrating to Canada as a Skilled Worker
Skilled workers are people whose education and work experience will help them find work and make a home for themselves as permanent residents in Canada. Skilled workers are people who may become permanent residents because they are able to become economically established in Canada. The selection process is based on the evaluation of an application submitted by a Principal applicant and will include his/her dependents such as spouse and children.

This application will be submitted in a Canadian immigration processing center located in one of the Canadian Embassies that has jurisdiction over the place of residence or citizenship of the Principal Applicant. To be accepted as a Skilled Worker, applicants must:

• Meet the minimum work experience requirements;
• Prove that they have the funds required for settlement; and
• Earn enough points in the six selection factors to meet the pass mark.

  Official Languages
The ability to communicate and work in one or both of Canada's official languages is very important. As a skilled worker abilities in English, French or both will be helpful in:
 
listen; speak; read; and write.

  WORK EXPERIENCE :
At least one year of full time, paid work experience in the selected occupation is required in order for the applicant to receive points for experience.
 
  AGE :
are given for your age at the time your application is received by the Canadian immigration authorities.
 
  ARRANGED EMPLOYMENT :
 
Certain Candidates may obtain additional points if they have a validated offer of employment from a Canadian employer. This offer of full time permanent employment has to be validated by the Human Resources Department in Canada, confirming that there is no available Canadian Citizen or permanent resident capable of satisfying the employer for the position to be filled.
 
  ADAPTABILITY :
An applicant may receive a maximum of 10 points for any combination of the following elements :
a) Spouse’s/ common-law partner’s education
b) Minimum one year full time authorized work in Canada
c) Minimum two year full-time authorized post-secondary study in Canada
d) Have received points under the Arranged Employment in Canada factor
e) Family relationship in Canada
 
The selection criteria have been developed for the purpose of assisting visa officer in determining whether an applicant for permanent residence has the ability to create or maintain employment in Canada and becoming successfully established. Any applicant must obtain at least 67 points of assessment to be selected as an independent immigrant.
 
The application process involves the preparation, completion and submission of the application for permanent residence and supporting documentation. Based on your profile, ACKER CHOQUETTE Advocates & Legal Consultants will provide to the applicant and the dependent, the list of documents required to support the application.
 
In cooperation with the client, the law firm shall prepare all the necessary documentation that has to be submitted in accordance with the CanadianImmigration Act and its regulations.
 
Once your case has been registered, the Canadian Immigration authorities will examine and evaluate the documentation submitted and will proceed with a formal assessment of your candidacy. They shall also proceed with a background check of all direct or indirect family members above the age of 10 years old. These checks can delay an applicant depending on the profile of the applicant. Once these phases are completed the Canadian authorities will schedule an interview at a specific time and place.
 
Normally there is a 12 to 24 months period between the time of registration of the application and the time of the interview. The time frame will depend on the post of registration of the client's application.
 
The processing time vary considerably depending on the volume, resources, staffing and infrastructure of a particular processing post. Application submitted to a Canadian visa post in a country where the applicants are not resident may take longer time to be assessed because the visa officer may make inquiries or consult with the visa office where the applicant is resident in order to verify the accuracy of the documentation and information submitted. Once an interview is scheduled, our law firm will prepare you thoroughly for the interview by taking you through a coaching session.
 
After completion of the interview, all immigrants must undergo a medical examination prior to landing including all dependents. All medical examination must be performed by a designated medical practitioner (The DMP). The place of examination is generally your place of residence. Our law firm shall advise you on the procedure to be taken for the medical examination.
 
Once the landing visa for Canadian permanent residence are issued for the Principal applicant and his dependents by the Canadian Immigration authorities, thePrincipal applicant and his dependents shall have one year from the date of the medical examination to do their landing.
 
In general the Principal applicant must land with or prior to the spouse and dependents.
Upon landing, an immigrant becomes a Canadian permanent resident with all the rights and privileges associated with permanent residence status. A landed immigrant who meets the requirements of the Citizenship Act will qualify for Canadian citizenship and a Canadian passport after atleast 3 years of residence in Canada.
